Dean Zepherin …
Electronic music has always been filled with innovative individuals, but even among such company Zepherin is a producer who has managed to find his lane and appeal. Born and raised in London, a suitably eclectic city for a man of his musical persuasion he is renowned for his consistently genre-pushing productions, having also spent time in Berlin, it became another city that’s left its mark on his always-captivating sound.

To fully appreciate and understand Zepherin’s approach, it’s necessary to go back to his roots in Harrow, London as it was here where he first encountered soul, funk and jazz fusion records. From an early age he was obsessed with these out-there sounds, as well as their ability to metaphorically transport him to a world far away from the confines of his hometown.

Adopting a more electronic-based sound later on, he soon became a natural at conjuring up “house” tunes with more than a hint of soul, the likes of which spoke to his own Caribbean roots. In the process, Zepherin describes his own raison d’etre with concise charm as ‘championing the emergence of indigenous influence in electronic music’, something now so endemic to much of the most in-vogue house productions, displaying a worldview that values above all the organic and the human in this machine.

While he’s undoubtedly best known for his work over the past nine years, establishing Tribe as one of the world’s leading labels pushing the afro and soulful envelope, his own legacy goes way back to 1988 when he released ‘Give me back your Love’ under the pseudonym Boyz in Shock, credited as the UK’s first soulful house record.

His label Tribe remains a vehicle for his many solo productions and collaborations and has hosted works and remixes from a diverse range of artists and legends across the electronic music board, as well as hosting his esteemed works with labels Defected, Suol, No Fuss, Soul 2 Soul, Vega records and Jack Trax.

Zepherin’s productions deliver impeccable slices of soulful and afro sounds fused in a futuristic musicality in which he emphasises the tension that soul music can have, rather than the release. His tracks and particularly his dubs under his moniker Zepherin Saint, are often full of suspense and atmosphere – check his ‘Take You There’ on Suol, or his ‘Skyy and Butterflies Dubs’ released on his own imprint.

Equally respected as a DJ as he is a producer, Zepherin gained his schooling playing the London sound system circuit in the 80’s and managing the legendary Black Market record store in the 90’s. His unique talents of playing dance music with no boundaries have been sought after in the likes of Japan, Africa, North America, Indonesia, Canada, Europe Australia and the Middle East, while on a club level he’s left his mark at world renowned clubs like Contact, Tresor, Watergate, Cielo, Stereo, Djoon, Ministry of Sound and Pacha.

A man of many considerable sounds and styles, it’s hardly surprising that Dean Zepherin’s colourful and diverse approach continues to enthral clubbers and electronic music connoisseurs across the world.

When thePeople began, you could get a studio apartment at the Lake for $500 a month. Folks running around the Lake were not exercising, they were trying to escape the smell of the water! The crackin-est club was the legendary Oasis (RIP). So much has changed over the last 11 years (almost everything) but you know what remains the same? Our love for the music and for all of you. No bullshit. Hoping the family can make it out to our 11th birthday party! Heavy weight deejays, Patrick Wilson (Elements/Nulife) & Jayvi Velasco (AfterAfterHours) will be exploding brains in the main room with Cec & Cali. Our long lost crew mate and People co-founder BE BROWN will be rocking the patio with heyLove*. The music will be right, it’s a sure thing. We can’t wait to see you!

Osunlade is an artist who personifies art. His music as well as his being creates unified melodies manifested with balance, life and wisdom. Hailing from St. Louis Missouri, a place known for pioneering blues, ragtime and jazz as well. At age seven Osunlade discovered the piano and the vision of his life’s destiny was born. By the age twelve he found an interest in creating song. He later formed local bands, taught himself several instruments and studied further the development of his craft. His professional journey began in 1988, at age seventeen during a visit to Hollywood. He quickly caught the ear of choreographer/performer Toni “Mickey” Basil. Offering him a role in the development of musical pieces for several projects including the children’s television series Sesame Street. With her encouragement he quickly moved to Los Angeles and began what would become a long history of music production. A few years later he would produce the very first album for the then independent Interscope Records. The artist was Gerardo, a longtime friend and aspiring actor/dancer. “Rico Suave” one of the very first Latin pop songs and novelty catch phrases to date was born. Now with a multi-platinum album and four gold singles to his name, it wasn’t long before he was afforded many opportunities to master his craft. Within the next years and over twenty albums credited, Osunlade felt the pressures and practices of the music business overshadowed his passion of music. He decided to no longer work under the influences of corporate ideals and demands. Choosing to find spiritual solace and honor his soul, he was led to Ifa, an ancestral based culture/religion based on nature, deriving from the Yoruba tribes of Africa and practiced by the slaves during the Diaspora to America. In1999, Osunlade would embark on what is now his dream come true. The founding of Yoruba Records. Recognized as one of the most important dance music labels worldwide, Yoruba Records is purely a source of music created to elevate the soul. As the success of the label grew, so did the demand for Osunlade to expand. In 2001 he released his debut album on the respected Soul Jazz Records label. “Paradigm” quickly became one of the biggest house albums that year and dubbed him the messiah of ancestral house music. With the support of DJ’s worldwide and his music now introduced to a wider spectrum of listeners, this veteran musician/composer/producer becoming the artist finally achieved balance within. Now known for his legendary DJ sets, remixes and albums including several mix cd’s, Osunlade has placed himself on solid ground maintaining his reputation of unparalleled quality in music.

thePEOPLE OAKLAND – EPISODE 121 – “FEEL FREE”

fflood aka Richard Wright, also affectionately known as ffloodi, is a Jamaican New Yorker with lots of chosen family in Oakland. He started deejaying in Kingston, Jamaica in 1985, where he was the co-founder of Ambassador’s Disco. Ambassador’s was a mobile sound system that quickly rose in demand and popularity for not only playing reggae, dancehall and soca, but also hip hop, soul, freestyle, new wave and 80’s pop. fflood moved back to his birthplace, New York City in 1988 during the golden era of hip hop, industrial and house music, and was transformed. He went on to spin at clubs, lounges, art openings, warehouse raves (and even a circus!) and soon became a part of the burgeoning underground techno, drum n’ bass/junglist and house music cultures. He moved to Oakland in 2002, where he started parties like Feel Free, Soul Selector, Magic Milkcrates, and had a residency at Jupiter for more than half a decade. He was also one of the first deejays to do at guest spot at thePeople over a decade ago!

In 2005, he co-produced a critically acclaimed future dub and roots album called “Negril To Kingston City.” He and mtfloyd are Transdub Massiv, and were blessed to have Me’shell Ndegeocello jump aboard to play bass alongside Jamaican acts like Rootz Underground and Tami Chynn. Transdub Massiv enjoyed successful tours and rave reviews in Europe with Me’shell.

ffloodi now resides in Florida, and he returns to thePeople to bring his eclectic style; celebrate 33 years deejaying (perfect number for a dj to celebrate!); collaborate and dance with old friends; and also to celebrate his 48th birthday in the Town he loves and misses.

In cities everywhere from Atlanta and Amsterdam to Toronto and Tokyo, vocal sensation Alma Horton — known to her fans worldwide as LADY ALMA – has become the name to know, deemed “the heart & soul of Philadelphia’s soul scene” and heralded as “the truth in a roomful of lies” among tastemaker’s circles.
Lady Alma’s fans run the gamut – from progressive artists like Moby, Kindred the Family Soul, India.Arie, Joan Osborne, Musiq and Les Nubians to regular working-class folk in West London clubs and West Philly barber shops.

Introduced to captive crowds via King Britt’s acclaimed 1998 LP, When The Funk Hits the Fan as part of his groundbreaking Sylk 130 collective, LADY ALMA’s since been catapulted to senior solo status, exemplified by the 20-plus barrage of irresistible songs she’s blessed with her choral magic – among them, Fanatix’ stunning “Higher” and “Gimme That Music” from Masters At Work’s In The House compilation (Osiris); Rednose Distrikt’s “Gotta Make A Move” (Rush Hour), 4Hero’s anthemic “Hold It Down” (Talkin’ Loud) and two highly-anticipated tracks by Japanese superproducer Yukihiro Fukutomi, “Peace” and “Hooked” (File).

One of the most widely-praised songbirds to surface from the ever-fertile City of Brotherly Love, LADY ALMA counts Philadelphia City Paper’s 2002 Best Female Vocalist Award and Temple University’s 2004 Sisters Defining Sisters Award for Artistic Excellence among her recent accolades, arguably due to her amazing vocal dexterity and engagingly gritty live shows. “Even if you’re into something completely different — punk, indie rock, bluegrass — you won’t be able to resist the Power of the Pipes: She just blows you away,” opines the Philadelphia Weekly. “And the more she sings — and scats and wails and whispers — the more excited the audience gets, until you’ve got a full-on revival-style meeting.” “If you’ve never seen LADY ALMA live,” attests Audioglyphix magazine, “she comes correct. If it’s at Black Lily, Afrorikan Vybe, opening for Cee-Lo at the TLA or when she was part of the Sylk 130 tour, LADY ALMA is the real deal.”

“Being on stage feels like sitting at home, relaxing. It’s natural,” Horton says of the high-voltage connection she creates with her audiences. “They give me such positivity, and some give me skepticism – at first. That makes me want to show them, ‘I can do this thing. And you can appreciate it.’ Most of ’em do. I’m blessed to have them receive me so well.”

“Every so often, an angel is sent down to heal us in time of need. Alma is one of these angels,” Britt says of his longtime sister-in-arms. “Her voice and words are what every human being needs to hear, so that we can continue to live and breathe. Her gift to us is timeless.” And it obviously didn’t go unnoticed: PW recently listed When The Funk Hits The Fan as #34 in its “100 Best Philly Albums of All Time” issue, citing “the supreme choice of untapped local luminaries like Vicki Miles, Alma Horton and Alison Crockette belting out an original blend of funk, soul and house.”

Born in San Diego, LADY ALMA found her voice at the age of three, keeping pace with an adult church choir. By the time she was 10, Alma had already toured the country coast to coast, a firm foundation for the extensive musical and vocal instruction gleaned from illustrious Philadelphia institutions such as the Girard Academic Music Program, Settlement Music School and the renowned Freedom Theater, where she also studied theater and dance.

“The best part of that type of creative environment was learning and grasping musical theory, but not just the stodgy kind,” Alma says of her formal-yet-informal training. “We were reading notes and writing songs, but also being taught to be individuals, to find our own unique selves in music. And I learned that, where others walk straight, I’d rather zig-zag. I don’t want to be boxed in.”

She’s put that philosophy into practice over the years, having collaborated with some of music’s best and brightest — Zapp Mama (“Show Me The Way”), DJ Spinna (“Chances”), DKD (“Getaway”), Baby Blak (“Daddy Dearest”), DJ Mitsu The Beats (“Away”) and 4Hero (“Hold It Down” and “Somethin’ But Nothin'”) – but it is her long-awaited debut that illustrates it full force. The album features an impressive roster of globally-revered sonic craftsmen and producers – King Britt, James Poyser, Dego McFarlane, Rich Medina and Cee Knowledge – who, with Alma, helped create its heady blend of mind-blowing vocal arrangements and category-defying musical styles. Internationally-renowned, London-based innovator Mark DeClive-Lowe also contributed four songs to the project, calling LADY ALMA “one of the most deadly and effective singer/songwriters I’ve ever come across.”

Paired in the studio, their dual magic is undeniable, exemplified in the amazing records they made together, among them the urgent soul-stirrer “Running For Nothing,” the frenetic “Keep On Moving,” the sensual “Gotta Be A Way” and “The Pressure,” a grinding reminder in troubling times that “the sun will shine again.” Alma and Mark also created an incredible reworking of the Michael Jackson classic, “I Can’t Help It,” which, while it won’t be featured on LADY ALMA’s debut album, will certainly be causing a stir on dance floors worldwide.

“That’s a great joint,” De Clive-Lowe says of his favorite track on the LP, “Running For Nothing.” “The song’s message is great, I dig the melodies and harmonies, the beats came together nicely, and it’s not quite like anything I’ve ever heard before. As far as ‘I Can’t Help It,’ for both of us, it’s one of our favorite songs of all time. It’s pretty deep to cover a song where you got Stevie [Wonder], Quincy [Jones] and Michael [Jackson] all up in there on the original. They created a classic. We came with a complete flip, though, and I think people are going to be feeling it for sure.”

Armed with critical global acclaim, standing-room-only shows and a discography that rivals the music industry’s heaviest hitters. LADY ALMA is already making an artistic impact that even she can’t yet fathom. And thank God. It’s the effortless mix of fire, humility and poise that serves as the foundation that’s catapulting her to dizzying heights. The sky’s the limit for LADY ALMA, and she’s got the relentless support of her ever-widening circle of friends and fans as the wind in her wings.

“I’m ecstatic about being able to work with so many great people on so many great songs,” Alma says. “You can’t have a closed mind in music. If your mind’s closed, you’re not going to grow. Music’s not just one petal, it’s an entire flower with many petals, many seeds, made up of many sounds and inspirations. Growth comes from inspiration, but in order to be inspired, you have to first inspire yourself.”

With Gratitude.

A decade has passed while we were dancing. Looking back, we see a brilliant Technicolor collage of sound, movement, heart & soul. So many beautiful moments. We’ve seen dancers touch the sky. We’ve watched people fall in love. We’ve witnessed the birth of fine art. We’ve seen the music transport entire dancefloors to other worlds and back. We’ve seen the power of music. We are the power of music.

To celebrate the milestone, AMP FIDDLER will be bringing his genius funk to the stage with a LIVE performance and freestyle session. He is the illest of all time and a very dear friend. We couldn’t think of a more fitting tribute for episode 113.

WITH GRATITUDE we dedicate this party to you – our cherished family of DJs, musicians, singers, dancers, artists, chefs, musicheads, creators, activists, leaders, lovers, fighters, thinkers, dreamers, doers, healers, Goddesses and Gods. YOU are thePEOPLE and we couldn’t love you more if we tried.

For the one hundred and thirteenth time, we invite you to come hold this space that we all created together. Thank you for this sanctuary. Thank you for ten years love & music.

ON SALAH ANANSE:
With over 20 years as a producer and DJ on the Atlanta music scene, Salah Ananse’s talent as a DJ has put him on bills with notable DJ’s such as Vikter Duplaix, DJ Kemit (Kemeticjust), Rich Medina, DJ Spinna, ?uestlove and Kai Alce. He has also held opening DJ spots for artists such as Jay-Z, Dave Chappelle, India Arie, Joi, Res, Fertile Ground, Dwele, Les Nubians, Musiq, The Roots, Donnie and Raphael Saadiq. Not only does Ananse rock crowds for some of the Southeast’s most popular party series such as One Music Fest, House In The Park and his own Afrique Electrique & Sunday School, he travels the world bringing his unique mix of soul, house & hip hop. He’s held a recurring stint in Brazil and performed in Ethiopia, Argentina, England and many more countries.

Salah Ananse has emerged in the dance music genre as a new force. His rhythmic instrumentation and smooth layered vocals make his sound unique and distinguishable among the rest. Although Ananse has been noticed for his production work, including remixes for Anthony David’s “Yes”, India Arie’s “Brown Skin,” and Jill Scott’s “Cross My Mind” which received underground airplay throughout the nation, he is just beginning to get recognized for his solo projects. After being featured on New Sound Theory Volume 1 with “Something New” and a collaboration with DJ Kemit as vocalist for the their project, Late Night Ritual, he took a 5 year hiatus from releasing personal projects and focused on production for other artists. The result is 2009’s, The Late Night Affair: Suite 701. Suite 701 is a producer driven project that features collaborations with Anthony David, JimiJames, Gaelle & more. This release also introduced Ananse’s Label AURALUXE. He has since released a solo EP titled Marimba Weapons, a collection of remixes for soul artist Carmen Rodgers, a single with his project – Ananse Scales Rebellion & a mixed compilation eponymously named after his successful party series Afrique Electrique Volume 1. In 2014 he launched a sub-label under the Afrique Electrique moniker that release work from Anthony David, Terrance Downs, Shontina Vernon & more. 2014 also saw the release of Ananse’s track “The Way” which is credited to his pseudonym The Late Night Affair. This track received worldwide airplay and was in heavy rotation by DJ’s such as Louie Vega, Ron Trent & Jihad Muhammad. This is signature track to date.

Over his career Salah Ananse has expanded his brand to include signature events. His Afrique Electrique party, which started in 2009 has become one of the most popular events for soulful house at Miami’s WMC. His LOVESEXY party, which is dedicate to the work of Prince expanded to Chicago in 2015. His Sunday School parties remain a summer staple in Atlanta. He recently joined forces with former collaborator DJ Kemit to do The Late Night Ritual party series. He also joined forces with the other 3 DJs from House In The Park to create & produce The Atlanta Weekender which celebrated 6 years in 2017.

thePeople started in November 2007 when some djs and music lovers realized a shared concern that the East Bay was overlooked as a taste making force. Oakland, with its history as a community of immigrants, transplants, leftists, same-gender-lovers, artists, and people of color, was an obvious place to create a gathering focused on creative community building through art and culture. thePeople quickly caught on and invigorated nightlife in the East Bay with fresh dance music, fresh energy, and by mixing music, with other creative strands from visual arts, to dance, fashion and food. Guest artists created live paintings and photo mosaics. Local activists registered voters. Local chefs sold tasty grub. All the while, the djs were dropping forward looking soulful tracks from across a spectrum of genres. You could hear cutting edge bass driven broken rhythms folded into Afrobeat or Brazilian flavored tracks. Of course the sounds of hip-hop, and the Caribbean would be heard. But the tracks always came from the influential rather than the derivative commercial end of the record crate. Oceans of dancers sweating until the lights came on became a regular occurrence. Meanwhile, world class urban dance artists of any style were conjuring ciphers and artisan vendors displayed their jewelry and t-shirts. But, the hallmark of the party may not be any of these things. It may be that most any night at thePeople you will see old friends and meet some new ones.

thePeople takes place monthly, every 4th Saturday at The New Parish in Oakland, California, USA.
